The show is a theatre / cabaret (emphasis on theatre), which follows the lives of five incredible early women of the blues, whose stories, and indeed voices, have been somewhat lost in history. Not only were these women iconic and influential in their impact on the development of blues and jazz music, they were also all either gay or bisexual, and rare champions of their time. Each of these incredible characters was born into abject poverty, some survived rape, abuse, destitution, homelessness – and yet all rose to fame and wealth during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920’s. And the absolute kicker is… it’s all true. While some creative narrative licence is always taken in theatre – these stories are not fictions. They are creative accounts of lives lived with courage, dignity and incredible passion. Before the great gay icons of our time, lived five women who we believe truly deserve to have their stories told. And some of Perth’s best known and loved actors / singers have come together to do it. – we also believe the show will be of major interest to your networks, incorporating theatre, early blues music by some of Western Australia’s best performers, GLBTQI themes and fabulous stories.
