I love finding out about the origins of the vintage I own. I acquired this set a few years back and have never worn it myself, it was only ever used for fashion parades that I have curated over time but this weekend with this sweltering heat I decided to don the suit and step out to Surfers Paradise beach where it was originally made. I wondered who bought it and wore it first? Anyway, here are some historical details about the design courtesy of Karen Neilsen Collection and the Gold Coat Fashions & Parades.
Designer Helene Walder, who owned Helene’s of Surfers Paradise was well known for her resort wear ensembles, cruise wear, play wear and swimwear. You could get this poolside ensemble I am wearing designed and sewn in Surfers Paradise on site. Helena opened her doors in 1958. Helene supported many single Mums in the town who were her out workers. Cut out patterns would be dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon. Others worked in her workroom behind the shop.
Helene Walter and Paula Stafford were behind the iconic Fashion Parades around the Chevron Hotels amazing pool which were a regular occurrence. Holidaymakers could choose their summer wardrobe while basking poolside with a cocktail in hand. Matching coverups allowed you to move freely through the hotel or sway up Cavill Ave to the beach.
Designer Helene Walder passed away in 2023
